Story

The beings emerged into the Glittering World, the world we live in today. As they climbed through the reed, they stepped into brilliance. The sun rose for the first time, casting gold across the mountains. The moon and stars followed, filling the skies with endless light. Rivers sparkled, plants grew, and the land was alive with movement.

Here the Holy People placed the Four Sacred Mountains to hold the homeland of the Diné:

East: Sisnaajiní (Blanca Peak), white shell dawn.

South: Tsoodził (Mount Taylor), turquoise twilight.

West: Dookʼoʼoosłííd (San Francisco Peaks), abalone shell sunset.

North: Dibé Nitsaa (Mount Hesperus), jet-black night.

Center (Holy Place): Dzil Na’oodilii (Huerfano Mesa) – often called the Mountain of the Center, place of emergence and balance

Sacred Cone-Shaped Mountain: Chʼóolʼíʼí (Gobernador Knob) – associated with emergence, gathering, and spiritual center

Between these sacred mountains, the Diné were given their home. They were taught the Blessingway and ceremonies to live in harmony. They were told that this Glittering World was both a gift and a responsibility: to honor the beings of the earlier worlds, to respect balance, and to walk in beauty each day.

But Coyote was still here. He moved among the people, never quiet, never still. His presence was a reminder: disruption always waits, and harmony must be chosen again and again. The Glittering World shone with beauty, but it was also fragile — and the people would need to protect it, carry its teachings, and live with care.
