In the beginning, the people lived in the Black World — a small, misty place of insect beings, First Man, First Woman, and the Holy People. Quarrels broke out, and Coyote, restless and sly, stirred conflict wherever he went. With prayers and guidance, the beings climbed upward into the Blue World, wide with light and birds in the sky, yet again discord grew. Coyote’s mischief unsettled peace, and the people were forced to journey on, seeking a place where balance could last.

They entered the Yellow World, bright and abundant, where the first humans began to take form and the Holy People gave the way of hózhǫ́ — harmony and beauty. But when Coyote stole the child of the Water Monster, floods rose and nearly destroyed them, until the Ant People sheltered the survivors and taught patience. At last, the people climbed into the Glittering World, our world today, where the Holy People placed the Four Sacred Mountains and gifted ceremonies to guide life. Yet even here, Coyote remains, reminding us that harmony is fragile, and beauty must be protected.
